Laurel News & Events

Great to hear from Australia last week that not only had i won the Knitwear Award with AL WRAPPED UP but all took out the Supreme Award with my felted dress ETHEREAL

How exciting! As a result of the Vancouver Fashion week I have been invited to this prestigious event in Beijing. Not much notice and finally put in the too hard basket but a great honour to be recognised and invited!

Great to be able to go this year to this great event and to share it with great friends made it even more special. Highlight of course was to win the Menswear again with my entry Lounge lizard. It was modelled superbly by Richie. It was a memorable night .

Another exciting trip to Australia for the Australian Wool Fashion Awards. A new venue at the historic Tamworth Town Hall for dinner and show. Was thrilled to have won with all four of my entries. I was delighted to have  my work recognised by the Judges and in particular Akira Isogawa. A great night and a huge thank you to Liz Foster and her team of organisers and the models.

These were held in Alexandra again this year. Delighted to win the menswear section (my first foray into menswear) and also the felting section. Thanks to organisers and sponsors for making this happen

How Exciting. As a result of winning the Australian Wool Fashion Awards I was invited to show at the Vancouver Fashion week!!
So after a lot of work putting together a Look Book, dressing and makeup instructions, packing, and the headache or sorting customs and freighting, my garments were off to Vancouver.

I am presented a collection of 12 award-winning outfits. The Fashion week was on from 16th - 21st September. I was included in the International day, which highlighted award-winning designers from around the world. It was so very special to be included!

My show was live streamed and was so exciting. The Slide show I presented on the big screen behind the catwalk of NZ scenery and the NZ flavoured music worked wonderfully worked well with my garments. I was the only New Zealander presenting and felt very proud.

A very successful festival held in Tauranga in July.
Laurel won the Championship Cup, Most Creative Garment, Most Creative Entry, Best Entry in Competition, Best Fashion Entry in Competition

New Zealand Machine Knitting Awards

So thrilled I was talked into going to the awards at the last minute. A big deal for me to get to Armidale, north of Sydney by myself. BUT it was so worth it, winning the Knitwear section and the Racewear section. Then my two entries went onto to be joint winners of the Supreme award!

Another win at the WoolOn Awards in Alexandra !

I finally got to go to the Awards this year so it was doubly exciting. It was a great show with many high quality entries. Oh Possum won the Creative Award. It was a merino dress and coat which unzipped to reveal a bolero and multi functioned as a cape. Looked great on the model. My supreme winning entries from previous years were on display too and looked great. An exciting time.

Melbourne Workshops

Just back from a whirl wind trip to Melbourne's major Knitting Seminar. I took 2 days of classes covering a wide range of subjects and some unusual techniques on felting and fabric making with machine knitting. Was a great seminar,  wonderful people, great hospitality, lovely knitting and of course plenty of food!! Took some designer garments for the Fashion parade for final evening and seemed to be enjoyed by all.

Now off to New York.... so will be researching, buying for sure and coming back with heaps of creative ideas and goodies.

Yeah!Winter Knitwear Collection 2011

The collection is now on my Fashion Collection page on this website and is available from my studio shop and online

Ellerslie Race Day - Finals of Fashion in the Field

What excitement to finally get to the finals in Ellerslie. There had been a few hitches on the way but thanks go to my daughter Alana who stepped in at the last minute to model for me. She did a great job and I was very proud of her. She really stood out as being different in the hand felted outfit and was in with a real chance. Unfortunately it was not to be - one overall winner was from Townsville, Australia. It was a great experience however and a fun day.

More Good News!

And again..... Winner Creative Award and Supreme Award at the Woolon Awards

Very excited yesterday to learn of my wins again at this event held in Alexandra each year. Its aim is to showcase the versatility of wool. My entry was a merino knit dress with layered merino boucle coat. Here is the entry entitled 'I C RED'.

Winner Fashion in the Field - Hawkes Bay Race Day.

A first time entry for me in this event and it was so much fun. I was delighted to be announced Creative Designer Winner and then Overall Winner. I have now won entry into the finals at Ellerslie Race Day in March 2011. Will be quite exciting!!!

Opotiki Fibre & Fleece Fashion Awards July 2010

The fashion show was held in Opotiki 9th - 11th July. I was very excited to win both the Wool, Knit, Crochet Award and the Fashion in Felt Award.

My knit entry entitled Out of Africa' was a  merino fitted dress with felt trim and a knitted merino coat with appliqued felt pieces from African print fabric.

My 'Fashion in Felt' entry was entitled 'Cut it Out' and was a fine felt dress with a pleated shrug. Felted in merino and silk.

The NZ Machine Knitters Festival was held in Stratford at the beginning of July. I was delighted to have won 2nd and 3rd places in the Supreme Fashion Award.

2nd was a bridal gown called 'Aphrodite' and was  knitted in tencil.  3rd place went to 'Autumn Harvest' knitted, felted and stitched using a solvy technique.
